New Aviation Complex Taking Off Near Honiara International Airport

The Solomon Islands is charting a new course in aviation infrastructure with the launch of a modern Aviation Complex near Honiara International Airport. This key development is part of the Second Solomon Islands Roads and Aviation Project (SIRAP2), with the detailed design of the facility scheduled for completion this month.

Funded by the World Bank, the project is being implemented by the Ministry of Communication and Aviation (MCA), with China Railway Construction Engineering Group (CRCEG) leading construction and Egis providing supervision.

CRCEG’s Environmental and Social Management Plan received World Bank approval on March 25, 2025, paving the way for pre-construction works such as unexploded ordnance clearance, geotechnical investigations, and site preparations. The contractor’s work plan was officially approved on April 11, 2025.

Target Completion Date: January 16, 2026

The new Aviation Complex will significantly improve operational efficiency and service delivery at Honiara International Airport. MCA Permanent Secretary Alwyn Danitofea emphasized the project’s importance, stating, *“MCA remains committed to delivering these vital projects on time and to the highest standards, with the continued support of the World Bank.”*

This initiative is one of several under SIRAP2, including:

– Noro road improvements and construction of four bridges in Malaita
– Airport upgrades in Honiara, Munda, Santa Cruz, and Suavanao
– New air navigation systems in Makira-Ulawa and Temotu
– Road upgrades: 21 km from Baratolo to Atori and 12 km from Auki to Kwaisuliniu

These investments aim to enhance connectivity, safety, and unlock economic opportunities throughout the Solomon Islands.
