RSIPF Clarifies Viral Photo: “It Is a Baton Torch, Not a Gun

The Royal Solomon Islands Police Force (RSIPF) has issued a statement to debunk a misleading Facebook post that has recently gone viral, causing public concern.

Photos circulating on social media appeared to show armed officers and a Chinese security guard at the Gold Ridge mine site, with many users claiming the guard was carrying a firearm.

Deputy Commissioner National Security and Operation Support, Mr. Ian Vaevaso, confirmed that the images were taken during a security operation on the morning of April 25, 2025. He clarified that the object seen on the security guardโ€™s shoulder was not a gun, but a baton torch placed inside a bag.

Mr. Vaevaso emphasized that it is illegal for any individual or company to possess firearms in the Solomon Islands. He urged the public to avoid spreading unverified information, warning that such misinformation only creates fear and confusion in the community.

The RSIPF encourages everyone to fact-check and seek accurate sources before sharing content online.
