The Solomon Islands Outrigger Team demonstrated remarkable dedication and skill as they prepared for the 2024 Pier to Pier Outrigger Race in Schorncliffe, Australia.

The highly anticipated Pier to Pier Race as part of the OC6 Marathon Series in Bramble Bay this month was hosted by
the Polynesian Va’a-alo Outrigger Canoe Club.

The race started from Shorncliffe on Saturday, 14 September, drawing clubs across southeast Queensland and Solomon Islands.

The Solomon Islands team’s relentless training, characterized by exhausting fitness routines, being out in the Solomon Islands’ heat, and long hours on the water, showcased their commitment to excellence in the sport.

This effort paid off when they clinched victory in the open mixed category and secured an impressive second place in the overall results last weekend at the Pier to Pier Outrigger race in Australia.

Their performance not only highlighted their talent but also underscored the significance of outrigger canoeing as a key element of their cultural identity.

Moving forward, Solomon Islands sports institutions and the government must collaborate closely with the Solomon Islands Outrigger and Canoeing Federation to host more events.

Such initiatives will nurture local talent and promote a sport that resonates deeply with the islanders’ heritage and sense of community.
