The Ministry of Infrastructure and Development has commenced important relief road works across several key areas in Honiara in an effort to ease traffic congestion in the Central Business District (CBD).
Last night, contractors undertook significant upgrades on Mendana Avenue and Hibiscus Avenue. Two of the city’s busiest thoroughfares. These works are part of interim measures ahead of full-scale rehabilitation under the Land and Maritime Connectivity Project (LMCP).
Mendana Avenue, from Point Cruz Solomon Motors to the Honiara City Council Roundabout, is undergoing relief works to temporarily improve road conditions and facilitate smoother traffic flow until its full rehabilitation begins.
Hibiscus Avenue, often used as a back road from Townground to King Solomon Hotel and the Hot Bread Junction, is also scheduled for a comprehensive upgrade. The upcoming works will extend to Lekamboli Street, enhancing connectivity and offering alternative routes for commuters.
Meanwhile, the Tandai Highway upgrade is progressing, albeit slightly behind schedule. The asphalt laying from Townground to White River is ongoing. Once completed, works will proceed towards the Honiara City Council Roundabout. The police traffic team has been instrumental in managing west-side traffic during this phase.
These upgrades form part of the broader infrastructure development strategy stretching from White River to Mberande along the East Guadalcanal Highway.
Authorities thank the public for their patience and cooperation as these important projects move forward to improve Honiara’s transport network.
