$50,000 and Shell Money Paid in Reconciliation After Brutal Killing of Malaitan Mother by 18-year-old Male

A reconciliation ceremony was held on Tuesday afternoon at the Central Police Station in Honiara following the tragic death of Salome Suri, a 29-year-old mother from Forau Village in North East Malaita. Salome was reportedly raped and killed last Wednesday in North East Guadalcanal. An 18-year-old male suspect has been arrested in connection with the crime.

The reconciliation brought together families of the deceased and the suspect, who has ties to Guadalcanal and Choiseul. In a culturally significant gesture of remorse and peace, the parties exchanged 30 tafuliae (traditional shell money) and SBD $50,000 as a sign of apology and unity.

Hon. Vokia

North East Guadalcanal MP Jamie Vokia, as the member of the constituency where the incident occurred, expressed grief and the desire to restore peace. He was joined by South Choiseul MP and Minister of Education Tozen Leokana, who also offered condolences, acknowledging the suspect’s roots in his constituency. East Guadalcanal MP Bradley Tovosia and other leaders also supported the reconciliation efforts.

Dr. Ramofafia

Speaking on behalf of the victim’s family, Dr. Christian Ramofafia, permanent secretary of fisheries, said while emotions were high, they accepted the apology as a step toward healing. He emphasized that the gesture marked the end of anger in accordance with Malaitan cultural traditions.

Minister of Police Hon. Jimson Tanangada

Minister of Police Jimson Tanangada praised the reconciliation as a powerful example of the Solomon Islands’ cultural strength in resolving conflict. Salome’s body will be laid to rest later this week, with her family now focused on peace and remembrance.
