The Solomon Islands is set to host the third edition of the Melanesian Spearhead Group (MSG) Prime Minister’s Cup 2024 as the National team will be defending the title at home this December 10-22.
The confirmation came this week from the visiting Director General of the MSG Secretariat, which secured an agreement with the Solomon Islands Government to bring the highly anticipated event to our local shores.
MSG Secretariat Director General Leonard Louma formalized the hosting agreement on behalf of the MSG Secretariat in a signing ceremony with the Ministry of Home Affairs, ensuring the Solomon Islands will once again showcase top-tier football talent from the Melanesian region.
The signing event was witnessed by Solomon Islands Football Federation (SIFF) President Donald Marahare and Chief Executive Officer (CEO) Leonard Paia, as the federation demonstrated its strong support for the hosting of the event in this football mad nation in the Pacific.
MSG Director General, Louma had expressed enthusiasm for the upcoming competition, emphasizing its role in strengthening cultural and sporting ties among Melanesian nations.
“The MSG Prime Minister’s Cup is more than just a tournament; it’s a celebration of our unity and shared heritage,” he said.
“We are thrilled to partner with the Solomon Islands to bring this event to Honiara, a city that has consistently embraced regional sportsmanship.”
SIFF President Marahare echoed this sentiment, noting the pride the nation feels in hosting the cup, which promises to spotlight emerging football talent across the MSG countries: Solomon Islands, Papua New Guinea, Fiji, Vanuatu, and New Caledonia.
“This is an incredible opportunity for us to gather as a Melanesian family and showcase our passion for football,” Marahare said.
“We look forward to welcoming teams and fans from our sister nations and to a competition that reflects the spirit of unity and respect that defines Melanesia.”
Solomon Islands national team won the second edition of the recently renamed “MSG Prime Minister’s Cup” last year in New Caledonia bringing them back the title since 1994.
