Building Connections in Malaita: A Journey of Partnership and Progress

The New Zealand High Commissioner and team recently embarked on a memorable two-day visit to Malaita, Solomon Islands, a trip filled with meaningful dialogue, strengthened partnerships, and inspiring visions for the future.

The journey began in Auki, where the team met with World Vision to exchange insights and reaffirm their shared commitment to community-led development. The conversations underscored the value of collaboration in driving sustainable progress.

Next was a courtesy call to the Malaita Provincial Government. The team was honoured to meet the Honourable Premier and his staff, engaging in constructive discussions about the region’s development priorities and the promising opportunities ahead.

A highlight of the visit was the trip to Bina Harbour, the proposed site for a much-anticipated tuna processing plant. Accompanied by representatives from the Ministry of Fisheries and Marine Resources (MFMR) and the MFAT-funded Bina Harbour Project Office (BHPO), the team stood on the future project site — a powerful moment that brought the vision of economic transformation into sharp focus.

Equally impactful were the heartfelt tok stori with community leaders and local residents. These open conversations provided space to listen, learn, and strengthen the collective path forward.

“This visit was a true privilege,” said the High Commissioner. “Connecting face-to-face with the people at the heart of this work is what makes our partnerships meaningful.”
