Honiara, Solomon Islands – June 6, 2025-Acting Prime Minister Hon. Frederick Kologeto MP today welcomed and held an open dialogue with young students from various schools in Honiara.
The meeting, facilitated by Save the Children, provided a platform for students to voice key issues affecting children across the Solomon Islands. During the roundtable discussion, the Acting Prime Minister listened attentively as the students raised concerns on a range of pressing topics, including child protection and safety, school sports, teacher absenteeism, health and sanitation challenges in schools, online bullying, and classroom overcrowding.

The students also call on the Government to consider declaring a National Children’s Day as a public holiday to honour and promote the rights and wellbeing of children. Additionally, they strongly advocate for a revision of the Marriage Act, proposing that the legal minimum age for marriage be set at 18 years.
In response, Acting Prime Minister Kologeto reaffirmed the Government’s commitment to legislating and advancing child-focused policies. He acknowledged the importance of listening to the voices of young people and ensuring their concerns are reflected in national policy discussions.
Hon. Kologeto expressed sincere gratitude to Save the Children and to the participating students for their active engagement and thoughtful contributions. He emphasized that addressing the challenges faced by children requires strong collaboration between government and stakeholders.

“The Government remains dedicated to working closely with its partners to implement initiatives that align with the National Development Strategy. Creating a safe, inclusive, and resilient environment for our children is not only a priority- it is a responsibility we hold for the future of our nation,” said the Acting Prime Minister.
This engagement reflects the ongoing commitment of the Solomon Islands Government to champion child-focused policies and promote youth participation in shaping the country’s future.
