The Member for Are’are and leader of the Independent Party, Hon. Peter Kenilorea, has officially announced via his social media account that he will be taking legal action against the Deputy Prime Minister and Member of East Guadalcanal, Hon. Braddley Tovosia. The dispute centers around the appointment of two public officers to the Board of members for the Solomon Islands Water Authority (SIWA), which is currently operated under Solomon Water.
The issue emerged when Hon. Tovosia, who made the appointments in question. In the statement of the appointments, they mentioned that the appointments were made under paragraph 1(1) of the Second Schedule to the Solomon Islands Water Authority Act (Cap. 130), which allows the Minister to appoint a Board of Directors for two years.
Hon. Kenilorea raised concerns regarding the legitimacy of these appointments, creating Hon. Tovosia to challenge him directly. In response to Kenilorea’s media statement, Hon. Tovosia suggested that the matter should be settled in the High Court, calling it the “right place” for such legal disputes.
Hon. Kenilorea has now accepted the challenge, formally announcing his intention to take the matter to the High Court for judicial resolution. This legal battle has caused significant public interest, with many now awaiting the court hearing to determine the outcome of the dispute.
The case highlights ongoing tensions within the government regarding the appointment and oversight of key public officials. As both political figures stand firm in their positions, all eyes will be on the High Court as it prepares to hear the case.
