CEMA Cabinet Sub Committee Director participates in Trade Promotion Seminar in China

Honiara, Solomon Islands – Director of the Commodities Export Marketing Authority Cabinet Subcommittee (CEMA CSC), Simon Chottu, has successfully concluded his participation in the “Seminar on Trade Promotion for Developing Countries,” held in Beijing, China, from November 6 to 19, 2024.

The seminar, organized by the PRC Embassy in Honiara and funded by China’s Ministry of Commerce, was hosted by the Academy for International Business Officials (AIBO). It brought together representatives from developing nations, including Nigeria, Gambia, Kenya, Laos, Armenia, Guana (Virgin Islands), and the Solomon Islands, to explore strategies for trade promotion, economic development, and international cooperation.

The “Seminar on Trade Promotion for Developing Countries” is an annual event hosted by China’s Ministry of Commerce. The program aims to foster knowledge-sharing and collaboration among developing nations, focusing on trade strategies and economic growth.



Representing the Solomon Islands, Simon Chottu was the sole participant from the country, joining counterparts from across the globe. The seminar featured engaging discussions and site visits, providing invaluable insights into China’s trade promotion strategies, economic reforms, and rural development initiatives.

The seminar delved into critical topics, including:

Trade-Promotion Institutions: Understanding the role of entities such as the China Council for the Promotion of International Trade (CCPIT) in market access and SME support.

Infrastructure Development: Learning from China’s advancements in rural electrification, digital trade platforms, and economic infrastructure.

Global Trade Agreements: Examining the impact of initiatives like the Regional Comprehensive Economic Partnership (RCEP) and the Belt and Road Initiative.
Sustainable Governance: Highlighting systematic reforms and leadership strategies to achieve long-term economic growth.

Insights gained from the seminar hold great potential for the Solomon Islands’ trade and economic agenda, particularly in the following areas:

Strengthening Trade Infrastructure: Establishing national trade-promotion institutions to support local businesses in accessing international markets.
Rural Development: Improving infrastructure and connectivity to enhance agricultural productivity and facilitate trade.

Policy and Governance: Aligning governance reforms with national priorities, such as the revitalization of CEMA under its new identity, “Solomon Commodities.”

Expanding Global Partnerships: Leveraging regional trade agreements and partnerships to boost trade opportunities and attract foreign investment.

“This seminar was a unique opportunity to learn from China’s remarkable economic transformation. By adapting these lessons to our local context, we can unlock new opportunities for our farmers, entrepreneurs, and economy. It’s a step forward in modernizing our trade sector and achieving long-term economic growth,” said Mr. Simon Chottu.

Chottu will present a detailed report to the Solomon Islands Government and stakeholders. This report will outline actionable recommendations, including:

Establishing a national trade-promotion institution.

Strengthening rural infrastructure.
Exploring regional trade agreements to enhance economic opportunities.
“Attending such a seminar is highly recommended for our leaders and stakeholders,” Mr. Chottu remarked.

Mr. Chottu extended his gratitude to the PRC Embassy in Honiara for the opportunity to participate in the seminar. During his time in China, he also met with the Solomon Islands Ambassador to China, H.E. Barrett Salato.

“We had a very productive discussion on advancing trade initiatives between our two countries and other diplomatic partners. I am excited to work towards implementing these ideas and achieving meaningful progress,” said Mr. Chottu.

The seminar marks a significant milestone in fostering trade development and international collaboration for the Solomon Islands.
