The Church Agency Network Disaster Operations (CANDO) has successfully concluded a one-week Monitoring, Evaluation, and Learning (MEL) training in Auki, Malaita Province.
The training was held at the Auki from Monday, 11th November, to Friday, 15th November 2024.
The MEL training was funded by the Church Agency Network Disaster Operations (CANDO) in Australia for its local partners in the Solomon Islands.
CANDO Partners attended the weeklong training are the South Seas Evangelical Church (SSEC), United Church of Solomon Islands, the Arch diocese of Auki for Catholic Church, Adventist Development and Relief Agency (ADRA) Solomon Islands of the Seventh-day Adventist Church, and the Anglican Church of Melanesia (ACOM).
Also, Representatives from People With Disabilities Solomon Islands (PWDSI) and the Australia Humanitarian Partnership (AHP) disaster READY Coordinating Body Save the Children participated in MEL training. The training was coordinated by ACOM, with ADRA Solomon Islands serving as the implementing partners. Anna Szava, a project design and MEL specialist r from CANDO support Unit in Australia core facilitated the sessions.
The training focused primarily on using the Kobo Toolbox (COBO) for MEL data collection, including conducting interviews in communities, gathering field data and impact stories, and uploading the information into the system.
The workshop aims to enhance the knowledge, confidence, and experience of CANDO project teams in MEL practices. It included refresher training and the practical application of key monitoring activities, such as, Focus Group, Discussions (FGDs), Key Stakeholder Interviews (KSIs), Observations, Post activity Impact Surveys and Monitoring Visit Protocols.
On Thursday 14 November, the team were separated into two groups and conducted a field practical visit to two communities in the Langalanga Lagoon namely Talakali and Surabuta where the Community Disability Centre (CDC) project was implemented. During the visit, the team had implemented what they had learned, collected data from the field, and input all the information into the COBO tool.
Program Coordinator of CANDO in Solomon Islands, Lionel Dau said that it is a pleasure to see such a diverse and committed team of different professionals within the church network and other NGOs gathered during a weeklong workshop.
He express his sincere gratitude to all the participants for their active participation, insightful questions, and willingness to share their experiences have truly made this MEL workshop a success.
Lionel added that Monitoring, Evaluation and Learning is cornerstone of effective program implementation and management, ensuring that we not only measure project progress but also learn from our experiences to improve future program and project outcomes.
