Hon. John Jnr Tuhaika Responds to Parliament on Unpaid Bauxite Shipments Issue

In a recent parliamentary session, Hon. Jnr Tuhaika, Member of Parliament for Rennell and Bellona, addressed the ongoing issue surrounding the unpaid 33 shipments of bauxite, resulting in an outstanding debt of SBD 288 million. Responding to a question about the views of his constituents on the matter, Hon. Tuhaika made it clear that this was an issue stemming from the actions of the previous government.

He explained that, from his perspective and that of the people of Rennell and Bellona, many individuals who signed agreements related to the mining in Rennell did so without fully understanding the long-term consequences. The people, according to Tuhaika, were not fully informed about the potential ramifications of their decisions when the contracts were signed.

“Everything to do with what is good or bad lies with the ministry and investors, so when they negotiate and sign, the playing field is not level. Now the people realize the consequences, but it is too late.”

In his remarks, Hon. Tuhaika emphasized that he would speak freely about the situation but also clarified that his comments would be based on the actions and ongoing efforts of the Government of National Unity (GNUT) to address the issue. His statement highlighted the importance of accountability in such matters and the need for the current government to work towards finding a solution to the longstanding debt.

The issue of unpaid bauxite shipments has been a significant concern in the country for the past eight years, and Hon. Tuhaika’s comments reflect a more regretful feeling of his constituents in Rennell and Bellona, who are seeking a fair resolution to the matter.
