Archbishop Cardone Opens Advent with a Message of Hope and Readiness

Honiara, Solomon Islands – On December 1st, Archbishop Christopher Cardone OP of the Archdiocese of Honiara marked the beginning of Advent with a heartfelt message of hope and a call to spiritual readiness. This day also coincided with the global Church’s launch of the Jubilee Year 2025, the Pilgrims of Hope.

Addressing the faithful during the 1st Sunday of Advent, Archbishop Cardone reminded Christians of their role as “builders of hope” in a world often marked by uncertainty. “The Church gives us beautiful readings during this season— readings that inspire hope, bring joy, and guide us in our Christian life,” he said.

The Advent season, a time of preparation and reflection, takes on special significance in the context of the Jubilee Year. Archbishop Cardone emphasized that Advent is about preparing for both the celebration of Christ’s birth 2,025 years ago in Bethlehem and His promised second coming.

“In Latin, Advent means ‘coming,’ and we prepare for the Lord’s coming. We reflect on His first coming in Bethlehem, which our nativity scenes beautifully remind us of, and we meditate on His second coming,” he explained.

Drawing from the Gospel of the day, Archbishop Cardone highlighted Jesus’ call to readiness, especially in light of the signs preceding His return. “Jesus spoke of earthquakes, rough seas, wars, and natural disasters, but His message to us is clear—stay awake, live moral lives, and be ready for the Lord’s coming,” he said.

As Advent unfolds, the Archbishop encouraged the faithful to embrace the season’s spiritual richness. “This is a time to meditate, pray, and prepare our hearts for the joy and hope that Christ brings into the world,” he concluded.

The Archdiocese of Honiara, like Catholic communities worldwide, will spend the next four years journeying through the Jubilee theme, focusing on renewal and hope. Archbishop Cardone’s Advent message set a moving tone, calling on Christians to remain steadfast and vigilant, living lives that reflect their faith and readiness for the Lord’s return…
