Passengers waiting to travel to Temotu Province aboard the MV Avaikimaine have voiced their frustration and concern over the vessel’s prolonged delay. It has been two weeks since the scheduled departure, and many passengers have resorted to sleeping onboard, with some having stayed on the ship for over a week. The delay has left passengers stranded and desperate for the ship to set sail without further postponements.
“We have been waiting for weeks, and the lack of clear communication about the departure is unacceptable,” said John Topon, a concerned passenger. “Families, businesses, and communities are all affected by this delay. It is time for the ship to leave immediately.”
Despite initial assurances from the shipping company that the vessel would depart as planned, passengers report a lack of transparency regarding the cause of the delay and any revised departure timeline. The uncertainty has imposed financial and emotional burdens on travellers, many of whom depend on reliable transportation for essential needs.
“We understand that operational challenges can arise, but there must be transparency and a commitment to resolving the issue quickly,” added Mr. Topon.
Compounding the frustration, attempts by some passengers to seek refunds have been unsuccessful. According to reports, the ship’s management stated that collected funds had already been used for engine parts and other expenses, leaving no money available for refunds.
“This feels like a scam, and those responsible must be held accountable,” Mr. Topon said. “They keep promising that the ship will be refuelled and depart soon, but it’s still here. It seems like there is no money to even refuel the ship.”
Passengers are calling on the shipping company to address their grievances and ensure the immediate departure of MV Avaikimaine. They are also urging relevant authorities to step in and question officials from the shipping company of the long delay and take appropriate action on them.
