Hon. Premier William Atu visited the Hotomai Cultural Center near St. Joseph Tenaru School yesterday.

Premier Atu said he was impressed by the simple set-up and
acknowledged the owners of the Hotomai Cultural Center for providing a glimpse into the simple way of life in the Birao region on the Weather Coast of Guadalcanal Province.

He emphasized that through the center, both local and international visitors will have the opportunity to learn about Guadalcanalโ€™s food preparations, chants, dances, house designs, childrenโ€™s games, and moreโ€”allowing them to fully embrace the local experiences.

Mr. Jessy Koli, spokesperson for Hotomai Cultural Center, thanked Premier William Atu and his executive members for their visit. He expressed that Hotomai Cultural Center is humbled to welcome and host the Premier and his team.

The Hotomai Cultural Center was founded in mid-2023 by Mrs. Jacinta Koli Vagha, a tourism officer for the Guadalcanal Provincial Government. The center features three mini-locally designed houses, each resembling typical homes found in rural Guadalcanal communities.

The word “Hotomai” in the Birao language means “welcome” in English and also conveys a sense of “oneness” or “community living upright.”

Premier Atu thanked the owners and organisers for being great Guadalcanal cultural ambassadors.

He also assured them that his executive will support the Hotomai Cultural Center in the future.

The Premier is accompanied by the Minister of Fisheries, Minister of Forestry, Minister for Women, Youth, and Sports, Minister for Education, and the Minister for Works.
