In a significant development ahead of the Motion of No Confidence (MONC) scheduled for Monday 16th, the government has a minister and Member of Parliament (MP) as John Tuhaika Jr., the Minister for Public Service and MP for Rennell and Bellona, resigned on Friday night. Tuhaika submitted his resignation to the Government House.
“I have resigned,” Tuhaika said, but added that he would explain his reasons for stepping down during the MONC debate on the floor of Parliament.
This resignation comes just hours after the Government of National Unity and Transformation (GNUT) expressed confidence in its ability to overcome the MONC, which has been filed against Prime Minister Jeremiah Manele.
The motion is being led by the MP for Central Honiara and Chairman of the Public Accounts Committee, Gordon Darcy Lilo.
Tuhaika, who was newly elected as the MP for Rennell and Bellona in this year’s National General Election, is now the latest government figure to part ways with the administration as the MONC approaches.
After his revelation, the Government of Transformation and Unity GNUT appointed a new minister replacing Hon. Tuhaika. Deputy speaker and government backbencher Hon. Sade was sworn in yesterday afternoon.
