NORI FOR FIRST FEMALE DEPUTY SPEAKER

The Government for National Unity and Transformation (GNUT), under the leadership of Prime Minister the Honorable Jeremiah Manele, MP, will put forward Honorable Cathy Nori as the candidate for Deputy Speaker of the National Parliament.

The Deputy Speaker’s post has become vacant following the appointment of the former holder, the Honorable Francis Sade, who is now the Minister for Public Service.

Honorable Cathy Nori is one of the three women parliamentarians in this 12th parliament; her election as Deputy Speaker will make her the first woman to hold this esteemed role.

Honorable Nori is also the deputy chairlady of the Caucus; she is the first woman MP to hold this position.
Her elevation to leadership roles affirms the government’s commitment to gender balance in leadership and shared responsibility.

Two other female MPs are government ministers, Honorable Choylin Yim Douglas is the minister for Culture and Tourism and Honorable Freda Rotutafi Rangirei is the minister for Women, Youth, Children and Family Affairs.
