JICA Launches Urban Transport Management Project in Honiara to Enhance Road Safety and Sustainable Public Bus System

The JICA-led new advisory project, “Capacity Improvement of Urban Transport Management in Honiara,” has been officially launched! Aimed to improve the road traffic environment and create a safe, convenient, and sustainable public bus system in Honiara, the JICA expert team in urban transportation has been assigned and started to engage the key stakeholders.


The success of the advisory project of ‘Capacity Improvement of Urban Transport Management in Honiara’ hinges on collaboration of various stakeholders. The JICA expert team will work closely withย  Ministry of Infrastructure Development (MID) and other stakeholders such as the Honiara City Council, the Road Transport Board, the Traffic Poilice (RSIPF) and the Guadalcanal Provincial Government (https://www.facebook.com/profile.php?id=100064279555480). Together, the project team will help develop and implement new public transport policies, clarify and standardise roles for bus operation, and improve the road traffic environment in Honiara.


The project’s key initiatives include the formulation of Public Transport Policies, standardising Roles for Bus Operation, developing Standards for Road Traffic Signs, and improving Public Car Parking Management, all geared towards providing long-term solutions. Through these initiatives, the project aims to make mobility in Honiara more accessible and sustainable, thereby supporting the community’s growth. The JICA expert team will conduct a series of consultations with stakeholders, including the bus operators, to identify issues and provide long-term solutions.

Our JICA expert team, led by Mr. Seki, an urban transport policy and traffic management specialist and supported by three other experts in urban transport planning, bus operation & management, has more than 20 years of experience in the urban transport sector.

They have applied their expertise in various countries, including Palau, Philippines, Vietnam and Myanmar, bringing a global perspective to their work. The JICA expert team is excited and looking forward to working in Solomon Islands for the next 2 years!
