Every festive season, thousands of Solomon Islanders travel by ship from Honiara to their home provinces. However, recent events have raised serious concerns about the safety of these journeys. A video circulating on Facebook has exposed the reckless practices of some passenger shipping companies in Honiara, where ships are being overloaded beyond their safe capacity. This disregard for regulations is not only illegal but also dangerous.

Shipping companies are legally required to adhere to strict passenger limits to ensure the safety of all aboard. Unfortunately, the pursuit of profit seems to be taking precedence over passenger welfare. Overloaded ships are not only uncomfortable but also pose a significant risk in the event of an emergency or adverse weather conditions.

A local resident, reflecting on the growing concerns, warned that “This country is waiting for another disaster, like the last ship incident and killed many locals. Before then, they’ll keep their eyes closed.” This is a scary reminder of the deadly consequences of ignoring safety standards. The incident of the MV Taimareho in 2021, which claimed the lives of over 20 people, serves as a haunting reminder of the dangers associated with poorly managed passenger shipping operations.

It is clear that if shipping companies in Honiara continue to prioritize profits over safety, it is only a matter of time before another tragedy strikes. The government, regulatory bodies, and the shipping companies themselves must take immediate action to enforce safety standards and ensure that the lives of passengers are never put at risk for the sake of profit.
It is not enough to wait for another disaster to happen before addressing the problem. The lives of Solomon Islanders are too precious to be sacrificed in this way.
