ADRA, MHMS and UNICEF Strengthen Immunization Efforts in the Solomon Islands
In a collaborative effort to enhance public health, the Adventist Development and Relief Agency Solomon Islands (ADRA), in partnership with the Ministry of Health and Medical Services, with UNICEF, have been strengthening immunization efforts through the immunization project facilitated by ADRA Solomon Islands across the Solomon Islands. This initiative aims to promote and raise awareness on immunization, expand vaccination coverage, and protect communities from preventable diseases, particularly among children under five and pregnant women.

According to ADRA Project Manager, Mrs. Sharon Kele, the partnership focuses on strengthening the Expanded Program on Immunization (EPI). The initiative encompasses three key components:
- Capacity Building: Training healthcare workers to efficiently administer vaccines and manage immunization services.
- Community Engagement: Raising awareness about the importance of vaccinations through local outreach and educational campaigns.
- Supply Chain Management: Ensuring a consistent supply of vaccines to health facilities across the nation.
Mrs. Kele highlighted that in October 2020, the Ministry of Health & Medical Services (MHMS) officially launched the nationwide Expanded Program on Immunization at Marau Station, located on the eastern coast of Guadalcanal. This marked a significant milestone in increasing immunization accessibility and coverage in the region.

The collaboration between ADRA, UNICEF, and the MHMS has significantly improved immunization rates, leading to healthier communities and a decline in vaccine-preventable diseases. The program’s success demonstrates the value of strategic partnerships in public health initiatives.
As part of its expansion, ADRA Solomon Islands plans to extend immunization services to 17 communities within Zone One of Gizo Mkolobagara, covering six schools and two active clinics in the northern region. Similarly, in the southern part of Vellalava, six additional schools and four clinics will benefit from these efforts. Furthermore, once additional resources are available, ADRA aims to reach 18 more communities in Roviana Lagoon.

Mrs. Kele reaffirmed ADRA Solomon Islands and UNICEF’s commitment to sustaining and expanding immunization services. Future plans include continuing educational campaigns and increasing vaccine accessibility to ensure that every child in the Solomon Islands receives essential vaccinations.
