Six new JOCV arrived in Honiara

JICA Solomon Islands are pleased to welcome six new Japan Overseas Cooperation Volunteers (JOCV) who arrived in Solomon Islands on the 8th of January 2025. They will undertake various briefings, Pijin language training, and cultural lessons for three weeks to prepare for their activities with each organization.

In Honiara, Mr. Kanto will be assigned to Solomon Islands Football Federation (SIFF) as a coach, while Ms. Kotomi will serve as a teacher at St. John School. In Buala, Isabel Province, Ms. Yumeno will be assigned to the Environment and Climate Change Office under Isabel Provincial Government, and Ms. Hitomi Mizutani will be working at the Buala Hospital. Mr. Kazuki will be assigned to Auki Primary School in Auki, Malaita Province. Finally, Ms. Hitomi Sugihara will be assigned to Helena Goldie Hospital in Munda, Western Province.

Mr. Kazuki expressed his first impression of Solomon Islands: “I felt the warmth of Solomon Islanders on the first day. When we arrived at the airport, many people waved to us. When we checked into a lodge in Honiara, we were given a beautiful necklace.”

Moreover, Mr. Kanto expected his activities at SIFF as follows: “I would like to contribute to the further development of soccer. I will especially focus on the young generations through my experience as a coach for eight years and a player for fourteen years in Japan.”

Six volunteers will begin their assignments at various organizations on February 3rd for a period of two years. The total number of active JOCVs in the country is now twenty-one. Notably, six volunteers are dispatched to the provinces of Isabel, Malaita, and Western including this batch.

This reflects the commitment of the JICA Solomon Islands office to focus not only on Honiara but also on other provinces, with plans for further expansion in upcoming batches this year. If you are interested in JOCV and wish to collaborate, please get in touch with us at JICA Solomon Islands.
