Prime Minister James Marape has ordered an immediate investigation into the cyber-bullying of Miss Papua New Guinea, May Hasola, directing police and the Department of Communications & Information Technology to identify and arrest the perpetrators. He expects a progress report by next week.

Marape condemned the online abuse, which included racially charged and derogatory remarks about Hasola and her parents on Facebook. He warned that continued misuse of social media could lead to government-imposed restrictions, including potential bans on platforms like Facebook and TikTok.

Praising Hasola for representing PNG at the Miss Pacific Pageant, Marape emphasized the event’s role in uniting the region. He apologized to Hasola, her family, and the people of Bougainville for the distress caused and pledged to meet her personally with his wife to offer support.
Marape assured that law enforcement is actively pursuing the offenders, stating they will be arrested and prosecuted. He urged social media users to act responsibly while the government works on strengthening cyber regulations.
