SBD1.3M Duty Exemption Admist Country’s Critical Condition
A recent document leaked on Facebook that could be real or fake shows the unbelievable amount of the import duty exemption allegedly signed by the Finance Minister Hon. Sogavare for the machines that Lee Kwok Kwen company procured for West Guadalcanal Constituency through Hon. Veke, who is not a member of the Parliament since the general election this year.
The document hasn’t been confirmed that it is real or fake. Local taxpayers are hoping that it is fake due to the large amount and current state of the country, their leaders won’t be this selfish.
This has stirred up the people’s confidence in the Finance Minister who has been fighting for the recovery of the country’s economy since taking the role.
The leaked document has been received with anger but also many questions.
Locals are taking this issue seriously because a week ago, the Finance minister mentioned that he was planning to tax Savu Savu (Lekona) which didn’t sit well with local sellers.
Hon. Sogavare spoke of the country’s current economy and how it needs to recover, but then did the opposite as is shown in the document.
Some people have highlighted the amount of machines ordered. They said these could be for a mining or logging company. Raising more suspicion into this information.
Apart from all the issues raised, people are talking about the 1.3M duty exemption.
These types of practices are dangerous for this country, granting excessive or poorly targeted duty-free status can lead to significant revenue losses, undermining public finances and reducing the government’s ability to invest in essential services.
Additionally, when exemptions are used to favor specific industries or companies without transparent criteria, it can create unfair competition and hinder the growth of smaller, domestic businesses.
This misuse can also encourage corruption and preferential treatment, as companies might engage in lobbying or other unethical practices to benefit from such exemptions.
Overall, while intended to stimulate economic activity, mismanaged duty-free policies can ultimately lead to market distortions and inequities.
Now it is up to the government to clear the air and tell the people if this is real or fake.
