SIPA Provide SBD500,000 Support towards Oceania Rugby 7s hosting

The Solomon Islands Ports Authority, trading as Solomon Ports, today provided a timely funding assistance of SB$500,000.00 towards hosting the 2024 Oceania Rugby 7s in Honiara next month.

The Solomon Islands Government and Oceania Rugby in partnership with the Solomon Islands Rugby Union Federation (SIRUF) signed the hosting agreement in October this year giving rights to host this prestigious Oceania event for the first time.

As a key partner, the Solomon Islands Government provided SB$2 million to support SIRUF in its preparations and further sought corporate sponsorship for the event.

Handing over the funds at a brief ceremony today, Chief Executive Officer of Solomon Ports, Mr. Eranda Kotelawala, said Solomon Ports is happy to support the regional rugby event in Honiara following the successful hosting of the 2023 Pacific Games last year.

“We are pleased to support international sporting events in this country and our contribution towards hosting the Oceania Rugby 7s is a testament to our commitment to sports in the country,” Kotelawala said.

Deputy Prime Minister, Bradley Tovosia who initiated the request to Solomon Ports commended the company for its ongoing support towards community obligations, especially, in sports.

“I wish to thank Solomon Ports for its generosity in supporting sports development and other community services in the country. This assistance demonstrates Solomon Ports’ dedication to bringing pride to our country,” Tovosia said.

Vice President of SIRUF, Moses Tepai conveyed his gratitude to Solomon Ports and the Solomon Islands Government for initiating the sponsorship support which is timely as SIRUF is ready to receive teams from all over Oceania beginning this Sunday.

“This funding support is timely and it will truly boost our preparations to ensure we host this event successfully with pride and lots of memories from our Oceania friends,” Tepai said.

Oceania Rugby Administration and Operations Manager, Miri Tuinona said Solomon Islands will host more than 400 rugby athletes who will begin arriving this Sunday.

“This is a huge opportunity for the Solomon Islands to host this prestigious rugby event, which will bring some of Oceania’s talents to Honiara. Oceania Rugby is proud to partner with the Solomon Islands Government and other partners to bring this event to Honiara,” she said.

The 2024 Oceania Rugby 7s will be hosted in Honiara on December 7th and 8th at the Sports City National Stadium.
