Hamilton, New Zealand – Solomon Islands’ 47th Independence Anniversary was celebrated with warmth and pride by the Solomon Islands community and students in Hamilton, New Zealand, with special guest Hon. Peter Kenilorea Jr. joining the occasion.
Honoured by the President and Executive of the Waikato Solomon Islands Society and Student Association, Hon. Kenilorea delivered a heartfelt address that reflected on the significance of national identity, unity, and shared values.
In his speech, Hon. Kenilorea reminded the audience of a powerful connection between the Solomon Islands and New Zealand national anthems, both begin by invoking God. “Back home it’s ‘God bless our Solomon Islands’. In Aotearoa, it is ‘God of Nations at thy feet’. That’s powerful. That’s meaningful,” he said, emphasizing the importance of grounding national purpose in faith and humility.
He also highlighted the important role every Solomon Islander plays in nation-building, stating, “It’s not something that happens in government offices alone… it’s something we all have to do.” He encouraged the community to take pride in carrying the Solomon Islands flag not just in hand, but in heart.
Drawing from scripture, Hon. Kenilorea reflected on the golden rule found in Matthew 7:12 and Luke 6:31, a call to compassion and justice that he said should form the moral foundation of the nation. “These words are timeless,” he said. “They form the bedrock not just of Christian ethics, but of the kind of nation we’re trying to build.”
He acknowledged that being away from home can often sharpen one’s appreciation for it. “From a distance, we start to appreciate the beauty, the complexity, and the potential of the Solomon Islands.”
The evening was not only a celebration of independence, but also a call to unity, kindness, and shared purpose among Solomon Islanders abroad.
