The newly appointed Chairman of the Foreign Relations Committee, Hon. Peter Kenilorea Jr., held a diplomatic meeting on Tuesday this week with His Excellency Higuchi Keiichi, High Commissioner of Japan to the Solomon Islands, to reaffirm and strengthen bilateral parliamentary relations between the two nations.
During the engagement, H.E. Higuchi congratulated Hon. Kenilorea Jr. on his appointment and expressed confidence in his leadership and commitment to advancing Solomon Islands’ foreign policy and democratic values. The meeting marked a renewed momentum in parliamentary diplomacy, with both parties agreeing to reestablish the Friends of Japan Parliamentary Group.
The Friends of Japan Group, co-chaired by Hon. Kenilorea Jr. and Hon. Rick Hou, Chairman of the House Committee, will serve as a strategic platform for inter-parliamentary exchange, policy dialogue, and democratic learning. The members of the Parliamentary Standing Committees are members of this group. Through this initiative, Members of Parliament from Solomon Islands will engage with their Japanese counterparts to explore best practices in legislative governance and institutional reform.
“There is deeper value in democracy,” Hon. Kenilorea Jr. stated. “The arc of progress is shaped by democratic processes, and through this partnership, we aim to learn from Japan’s parliamentary experience while sharing our journey of democratic development.”
The meeting also addressed challenges facing modern parliaments, including political polarization, public trust, and the evolving role of legislative institutions. Both leaders emphasized the importance of dialogue, transparency, and mutual respect in strengthening democratic resilience.
H.E. Higuchi reaffirmed Japan’s commitment to supporting Solomon Islands’ democratic institutions and welcomed the revival of the Friends of Japan Group as a meaningful step toward people-to-people diplomacy and regional solidarity.

Peter Kenilorea Jr., the Chairman of the Foreign Relations Committee of the National Parliament of Solomon Islands; Counsellor Katsumasa Maruo from the Japanese Embassy; and Wilson Orisi, the Secretary to the Foreign Relations Committee and also the Director of the Parliamentary Committees.
