Honiara, Solomon Islands – A routine fishing trip turned into a chilling encounter when Hon. Ben Maenu’u, a seasoned fisherman and navigator, discovered a mysterious boat adrift near Ramos Island between Malaita and Isabel. What appeared at first to be a regular sight soon revealed signs of something far more unusual.
The vessel, fully covered and weathered from exposure, bore heavy algae on its hull, suggesting it had been at sea for weeks. With four outboard motors still attached and a partially open hatch hinting at a concealed interior, the boat’s presence has caused speculation and concern.
As the Pacific region sees an alarming rise in transnational drug trafficking, the discovery has raised questions. In 2025 alone, over 225 metric tons of cocaine were seized across Pacific routes, with so-called “narco subs” and abandoned vessels appearing in Tonga, the Marshall Islands, and beyond.
This latest find adds to growing fears in the Solomon Islands, where communities are increasingly vulnerable to drug-related crime. Reports of illicit activities near logging camps and young people being exploited underscore the urgent need for vigilance.
Hon. Maenu’u’s encounter serves as a great reminder that even in the vast, tranquil waters of the Pacific, hidden dangers are becoming all too real, turning fishing trips into encounters with the shadowy undercurrent of international crime. Authorities are yet to confirm any investigation, but the incident reinforces calls for stronger maritime surveillance and community awareness.
