Honiara, Solomon Islands — Minister of Mines and Member of Parliament for West Makira, Hon. Derick Manu’ari, has issued an urgent appeal to Makirans involved in illegal mining activities at the Gold Ridge Mining site to vacate the area immediately.
The Minister said the call applies to all Makirans, regardless of constituency, who may be participating directly or indirectly in the illegal operations. He acknowledged that some individuals may have been invited by friends to visit the site, but stressed that such activities are prohibited under the Mines and Minerals Act.
“It is illegal to pan for gold in pits excavated by Gold Ridge Mining Limited (GRML). This area is within the Mining Lease and Prospecting License area of GRML and is therefore out of bounds,” Hon. Manu’ari said.
He urged those involved to allow the responsible authorities to deal with the matter in collaboration with the company and the landowning communities.

The Minister also appealed to those at the site to return to Honiara, where arrangements will be made for their safe travel back to Makira.
“Please leave the area and cooperate with the authorities. Your understanding and cooperation are appreciated,” he added.
Illegal mining at Gold Ridge has been a recurring concern for both the government and the mine’s operators, with authorities warning of legal consequences and environmental risks.
