Nauru signs MOU on the Third Country Resettlement Arrangement with Australia

President David Adeang and Australia’s Minister for Home Affairs, Immigration and Citizenship, Tony Burke signed an MOU on the Third Country Resettlement Arrangement, 29 August.

The agreement contains undertakings for the proper treatment and long-term residence of people who have no legal right to stay in Australia, to be received by Nauru.

Australia will provide funding to underpin this arrangement and support Nauru’s long-term economic resilience.

The MOU was signed during the visit by Mr Burke where he also met with the cabinet and the entire Nauru Parliament.

In announcing the MOU, the President and Minister referred to further long- term visas to be granted by Nauru to people who no longer have a legal right to remain in Australia.

This MOU will allow the continued management of the NZYQ cohort.

In delivering the budget speech in Parliament, 29 August, President Adeang said the amount from the MOU will be for long-term economic support.

“The capital fund will be distributed to the Nauru Trust Fund, to support Nauru’s long-term economic resilience and the operationalisation of the agreement contingent to the cohort size received.”

The agreement will be activated when Nauru receives the first transferees. //
