The Commissioner of the Correctional Service Solomon Islands (CSSI), Mactus Forau, recently conducted an official visit to the Kirakira Correctional Centre (KCC) in Makira/Ulawa Province.
The purpose of the visit was to engage directly with officers on key matters relating to the CSSI Human Resources Development Plan, including transfer orders, training opportunities, and promotions.
Commissioner Forau also used the opportunity to assess the performance and professional standards of both staff and inmates at the facility.
During a muster with the KCC staff, Commissioner Forau encouraged the management and officers to maintain high levels of discipline and professionalism, noting that such standards are essential to building public confidence and trust in the Correctional Service Solomon Islands.

KCC Commandant, Inspector John Keith, expressed his gratitude for the Commissioner’s visit and the moral and administrative support extended by the CSSI Executive Office.
As part of the visit, Commissioner Forau also paid a courtesy call to the Makira/Ulawa Provincial Government Executive, where discussions focused on the proposed relocation and expansion of the Kirakira Correctional Centre.
“The relocation of KCC is of paramount importance and must be implemented due to its current geographical limitations,” said Commissioner Forau.
“I urge the Provincial Government and stakeholders to invest in inmate capacity development, so that upon their release, they return as productive members of society. Rehabilitation is an integral part of our mission.”

Commissioner Forau presented a draft concept development plan and Memorandum of understanding (MOU) to the Provincial government views and deliberation.
Makira/Ulawa Provincial Premier, Hon. Stanley Siapu, thanked Commissioner Forau for visiting the province and reaffirmed his government’s continued support for CSSI’s work.
“The Provincial Government stands firmly behind CSSI’s development goals, including the allocated site for the correctional facility’s relocation,” said Premier Siapu.

In addition to visiting KCC, Commissioner Forau made courtesy calls to several key stakeholders in Kirakira, including the Public Solicitor’s Office, Makira/Ulawa Provincial Police Commander, Kirakira Magistrate Court, Diocese of Hanuato’o (Anglican Church of Melanesia) and Kirakira Hospital.
Commissioner Forau expressed his sincere appreciation to the Makira/Ulawa Provincial Government, key stakeholders, and local communities for their continued support and prayers toward Kirakira Correctional Centre and CSSI as a whole.
