HONIARA, Solomon Islands – The National Disaster Council, alongside the Choiseul Provincial Disaster Operations Committee, is ramping up emergency relief efforts in Choiseul Province following Cyclone Maila’s aftermath.
Relief supplies, including food and non-food items, are being distributed to affected communities this week, coordinated by the National Emergency Operations Centre. Local disaster committees are supporting the unloading and distribution process.

National Disaster Council Chair David Hiba Hiriasia praised stakeholder cooperation, saying it’s “critical to ensure the flow and smooth distribution of relief supplies.”
Cyclone Maila intensified to Category 5 on 8 April, prompting a State of Disaster declaration for Western and Choiseul provinces on 10 April.

The cyclone weakened by 11 April, but significant damage has been reported, including 21 health facilities impacted, a critical WASH situation due to water contamination, 31,945 individuals need emergency shelter and essentials and 59 schools damaged, affecting 2,000 children.
The government and partners continue to respond to the disaster’s aftermath.
