Since 2006, over 600 Solomon Islanders have been supported by the Australian government to pursue world-class education through Australia Awards Scholarships. These opportunities have nurtured a new generation of leaders committed to national development across various sectors.

Among them is Dr. Lazarus De Neko, a 2014 graduate of James Cook University, who exemplifies the transformative impact of the program. Holding a Master of Public Health and a Master of Business Administration, Dr. De Neko now works with the Global Fund, leading efforts to combat malaria, tuberculosis, and HIV in partnership with international stakeholders.

“The Australia Awards Scholarship changed my view on health services,” said Dr. De Neko. “The MBA increased my capacity in planning, budgeting, and systems strengthening.”
Dr. De Neko recently shared his inspiring journey at the inaugural Australia Awards Alumni Impacts Networking Event. Themed “Healthy Communities, Informed Voices: Alumni Making a Difference,” the event highlighted the pivotal role alumni play in shaping a healthier future.
Dr. De Neko’s leadership in advancing health initiatives in Choiseul Province stands as a testament to the lasting impact of education and international collaboration.
