The Commonwealth Heads of Government Meeting (CHOGM 2024) opens in Apia, Samoa.

Minister of Foreign Affairs and External Trade, Hon. Peter Shanel Agovaka is leading the Solomon Islands delegation where for the first time the biennial event is being hosted by a Pacific island nation and the first time King Charles III will deliver the opening address as Head of the Commonwealth.

The theme of the CHOGM 2024 is โ€œOne Resilient Common Future: Transforming Our Commonwealthโ€ will cover the following key areas;

1. The Resilience of Societies and People.
2. The Resilience of Democratic Institutions.
3. The Resilience of the Environment.
4. The Resilience of the Economies.

The event includes side events throughout the week which Minister Agovaka attended some including an event on Human rights and Climate Change, an event on Digital Transformation Critical Success Factors and Challenges in the Commonwealth and the Commonwealth Sports Breakfast.

The main meetings that the Minister will attend includes the Commonwealth Small States Ministerial Meeting (CSSMM), the Pre-CHOGM Commonwealth Foreign Affairs Ministers Meeting, The CHOGM Executive Sessions and The Leaders Retreat.

During the Retreat, Leaders will elect a new Secretary-General who will replace the incumbent the Rt Hon. Patricia Scotland whose term will end in March 2025.
