The Minister of Foreign Affairs and External Trade of Solomon Islands, Hon. Peter Shanel Agovaka, met with the Member of the Political Bureau of the Communist Party of China (CPC) Central Committee and Minister of Foreign Affairs of the Peopleโ€™s Republic of China, H.E. Wang Yi in Xiamen City, Fujian Province.

The meeting took place on Wednesday (28th May 2025) ahead of the Third China-Pacific Island Countries Foreign Ministersโ€™ Meeting.

During the bilateral meeting, Hon. Agovaka highlighted Solomon Islandsโ€™ achievements under the Belt and Road Initiative and commended the Peopleโ€™s Republic of China for its global initiatives aimed at fostering a safe, prosperous, and peaceful world.

The Minister of Foreign Affairs and External Trade of Solomon Islands, Hon. Peter Shanel Agovaka, met with the Member of the Political Bureau of the Communist Party of China (CPC) Central Committee and Minister of Foreign Affairs of the People’s Republic of China, H.E. Wang Yi.

He noted that bilateral relations between the two countries have yielded tangible results, particularly in fostering connectivity and strengthening people-to-people ties.

Hon. Agovaka expressed appreciation for China’s support in the construction of 161 communication towers across Solomon Islands, an initiative that is significantly enhancing national infrastructure.

Discussions focused on strengthening the comprehensive strategic partnership between Solomon Islands and China, built on mutual respect and guided by Solomon Islandsโ€™ development needs.

Both sides reaffirmed their shared commitment to building a community with a shared future in the new era. The relationship continues to diversify, with China remaining Solomon Islandsโ€™ largest trading partner and a key infrastructure development partner.

Hon. Agovaka reaffirmed that China is a genuine and trustworthy friend of Solomon Islands.

He emphasized the countryโ€™s commitment to working closely with China on all matters of mutual concern, promoting multilateralism, and standing united against protectionism and unilateral actions.

He reiterated the shared goal of advancing a more integrated, connected, and rules-based multilateral world order grounded in international law.

The Minister further acknowledged and welcomed Chinaโ€™s continued support for Solomon Islandsโ€™ people-centered development agenda.

He welcomed Minister Wang Yiโ€™s assurances of increased support for the countryโ€™s economic and social development, efforts to strengthen trade and cultural ties, and encouragement for Chinese enterprises to invest and conduct business in Solomon Islands.

Hon. Agovaka also thanked China for its support as the Solomon Islands prepares to host the 54th Pacific Islands Forum Leaders Meeting in September 2025.

Minister Wang Yi warmly welcomed Hon. Agovaka to Fujian Province, a region with rich historical ties, including Pingtan Islandโ€™s connection to Austronesian peoples.

He expressed hope that both countries will seize the opportunity to deepen bilateral relations and jointly promote stable and sustainable development.

Minister Wang also reflected on the successful visit of Prime Minister Jeremiah Manele to Xiamen in 2024 and reaffirmed Chinaโ€™s commitment to working with Solomon Islands and other like-minded nations.

The bilateral meeting concluded on a positive and constructive note, with Solomon Islands expressing deep appreciation for the opportunity to engage in meaningful dialogue with a country that views all nations, regardless of size, as equal partners.
