Correctional Services Solomon Islands (CSSI) has successfully completed its first ever Cohort of gender training to the New Entrance Correctional Officers (NECO) after the launching of the 2024 Gender Audit Report in Honiara recently
Speaking at the closing of the training, CSSI Gender Coordinator Senior Sergeant Catherine Nalakia commended the NECOs for their commitment to the foundational training, which is a key recommendation of the Hand in Hand for Gender Equality: 2024 Gender Audit Report.
“On behalf of the Office of the Commissioner, I would like to acknowledge the first cohort of NECOs for completing this foundational training on Gender and Power Relations and Violence Against Women,” said Senior Sergeant Nalakia.
“This training is not just another milestone in your induction—it is a crucial step towards building a more respectful and inclusive correctional service.”
She highlighted that over the five-day program, participants gained valuable knowledge and practical skills in understanding the root causes of violence, including gender-based violence, sexual violence, and domestic violence.
“You now have a deeper understanding of how such violence is perpetuated, why it has persisted for so long, and the challenges involved in changing harmful behaviours,” she added. “This training encourages you to reflect on your personal lives, your relationships, your workplace, your communities, and our organization through a lens that promotes equality and dignity—especially for women and girls.”
Senior Sergeant Nalakia also extended her appreciation to the trainers and facilitators for their professionalism and dedication in delivering the training.
She acknowledged the continued support of the Australian Solomon Islands Partnership for Justice (ASIPJ), GEDSI Officer and Gender Specialist, and expressed gratitude to the Christian Care Centre (CCC) of the Anglican Church of Melanesia (ACOM), and Men’s Shed for their presence and support during the week-long program.
Finally, she commended the CSSI Commissioner and Executive for their ongoing leadership and commitment to supporting gender equality initiatives within the service.
The successful completion of this training marks a significant step forward in CSSI’s efforts to mainstream gender awareness and promote a culture of respect and dignity across all levels of the organization.
